The history of “Black Friday”

Do you know how the term “Black Friday” became connected to the biggest shopping day of the year?

The phrase actually dates back to the 1950s, when Philadelphia police officers used it to describe the overwhelming crowds and traffic jams that hit the city the day after Thanksgiving. Shoppers poured into downtown, creating chaos that made the day anything but festive for law enforcement.

By the 1980s, retailers reframed the term with a more positive meaning—marking the point in the year when their sales would shift from “in the red” (operating at a loss) to “in the black” (finally turning a profit). The name stuck, and Black Friday soon became the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season.

Since then, tradition has grown, evolved, and in many places, become a holiday weekend all its own.

Because our store isn’t open on Fridays during the winter months, we’ve created our own version of the event: Black Saturday, the day right after the official Black Friday rush. This gives our customers the freedom to hit the big retailers on Friday, then come see us on Saturday for all their pool and spa needs, without missing out on holiday savings.

Be sure to stop by and take advantage of our seasonal deals, then settle in and relax after all that shopping!
