Pool Closing Products: A Closer Look

Preparing your pool for winter is easier—and far more effective—when you understand what each closing product does. Here’s a breakdown of the essentials and how they work together to protect your pool during the colder months.

Balancers

Before closing, ensure your alkalinity and pH are properly balanced. This step helps protect your pool surfaces, equipment, and water quality through the off-season. Other balancing products may be required depending on your current water chemistry. Bring a water sample, and your pool professional can recommend the right adjustments for winter protection.

Closing Kits

Closing kits are formulated specifically for cooler water temperatures to help prevent algae growth, bacteria, staining, and scale formation once the pool is closed.

Our Deluxe Closing Kit includes:

• Hibershock
• Hiber Algaecide II
• Hiber Stain & Scale

The kit treats pools up to 80,000 L. If your pool is 40,000 L or smaller, you can safely use half the kit now and save the remainder for next season.

StowAway

This product cleans and deodorizes your solar blanket, allowing you to store it while it is still wet. It also helps deter rodents and pests from nesting in the folds during winter.

BioGuard Lubricating Anti-Freeze

Anti-freeze is recommended in all pool pumps during closing. This specially formulated version includes a built-in lubricant to help keep pump seals wet and discourage seizing when you reopen the pool in spring.

Cell Cleaner

If your pool uses a salt system, clean the salt cell before winter. Removing scale or debris from the fins helps prevent damage and keeps the system performing properly when reopening.

Filter Perfect

Filter Perfect is designed for filter cleaning.

• Sand filters: add the jug to a 4 L bucket of water, pour into the pump, allow it to sit in the filter overnight, then backwash the following morning.
• Cartridge Filters: add the 1L jug to 20L container of water.  If you are using a smaller container, then you can reduce the amount of Filter Perfect being used.  Allow the cartridges to soak overnight.  The next morning, thoroughly rinse the cartridge and then allow them to dry completely.  This will help to tighten the fibers of the filter.

Off the Wall / Waterline Eraser

To prevent staining along the pool walls, clean the waterline before closing.

• Use a waterline eraser for everyday rings.
• For more stubborn buildup, use BioGuard Off the Wall. Apply it to a cloth or sponge and gently scrub—without excessive pressure that could damage the liner pattern.
• Rinse each cleaned section using your pool water.

Wall Brush

Brushing keeps algae suspended in the water so your sanitizer can effectively destroy it. Remember to brush the dead spots—under return jets, tight corners, and around steps or ladders.

Deep Leaf Net / Leaf Bagger

Never close a pool with leaves inside. Leaves release tannins that can stain pool surfaces.

• A deep leaf net helps remove debris from the pool floor throughout the season.
• A leaf bagger is ideal for heavy leaf accumulation. Attach your garden hose—the water pressure pushes leaves into the collection bag, making cleanup fast and efficient, especially after autumn storms.

Winter Plugs & Gizzmos

For inground pools, protecting underground plumbing is essential. After blowing out the lines and adding anti-freeze, winter plugs and gizzmos prevent water from re-entering and causing freeze damage.

Winter Covers

A proper winter cover helps:

• Keep out debris
• Reduce algae and bacteria growth
• Protect your liner from falling branches or objects during winter storms

A well-secured, good-quality cover makes spring opening significantly easier.

Cover Pumps

Cover pumps remove standing water from the winter cover caused by rain, melting snow, or ice. Always monitor both the water on top of the cover and underneath it. Allowing the cover to sink too far can lead to water displacement and potential damage.
